  • Basic rules
    • The grid
      • The center of the screen is dominated by a 5 x 5 grid that contains the following icons.
        • Heart: Heals 1 hit point
        • Swing: Attacks the enemy; this is the stronger of the two attacks
        • Sword: Attacks the enemy; this is a weaker basic attack
        • Shield: Defends against enemy attacks
          • When you equip a shield, it appears below your character.
          • The shield remains active until the enemy attacks.
          • No damage will be done to you when you’re equipped with a shield while you’re being attacked.
      • Select an icon from the bottom of the grid to equip it.
      • To activate the icons’ bonuses, you must equip 3 of them in the arsenal at any given time.
    • The arsenal
      • You have 7 spaces available at the arsenal.
      • Form groups of 3 to deploy their bonus into the battle.
        • The icons automatically activate once you have three of them.
        • Icons that don’t form a trio remain in the arsenal.
      • If your arsenal fills up and no trios are present, all the icons are discarded when the enemy attacks you unopposed.
    • Deploying actions:
      • You have 3 basic actions contingent on cards:
        • Attack
        • Defend
        • Heal
      • You can perform any of these actions as many times as you can before the enemy attacks.
  • Enemy attacks
    • Enemies attack in intervals indicated by the timer bar.
      • Once the timer bar expires, the enemy attacks.
      • You can attack the enemy as many times as you can
    • The strength of the enemy’s attacks is shown on their side of the screen.
    • Enemies get stronger with every round.
      • The enemies you face often have more health points than you do.
      • Keep replenishing your hit points to stay alive.
      • Use the shields to nullify their attacks.
    • Keep playing until you defeat the final enemy.
  • Upgrades
    • Each time you defeat an enemy, you have a chance to upgrade your attacks.
    • Choose from the following:
      • Increase your attack strength by 1 point.
      • Increase your total hit points by 1 point.
        • This creates a space in your hit point bar that you still must fill in. Given that you’ll sometimes need to clear out heart icons, this is not a major issue.
      • Restore all your hit points.
      • Start the next round with a shield.
    • Attack strength and hit point upgrades remain with you throughout the playthrough.
